In a significant effort to tackle youth unemployment in Sierra Leone, the Mayor of Port Loko City Council, His Worship Alieu Barbardie Tarawalie, announced the employment of 600 youths under the Green Public Work Project, funded by the World Bank. This initiative marks the second phase of the project, following the successful employment of 500 youths in the first phase. During a recent address to the newly employed youths, Mayor Tarawalie emphasized the project's importance in promoting cleanliness and public health within the city. He stated that the primary goal is to maintain a clean environment and eliminate breeding grounds for disease-carrying vectors such as rats and cockroaches. “We aim to make Port Loko the cleanest city in the near future,” he assured the crowd.
Youths will be engaged in various activities, including waste collection and disposal throughout the city. The Mayor encouraged them to approach their tasks with diligence and effectiveness, highlighting the vital role they play in enhancing the quality of life for all residents.
Maria Sankoh, one of the newly employed youths, praised the mayor for this initiative. She expressed her gratitude and commitment, stating, “This is a great move, and we assure Aim Net News that we will put in our best to ensure Port Loko becomes clean. It is a privilege for us, as there are many young people out there seeking employment. The Green Public Work Project not only aims to reduce unemployment but also fosters a sense of civic responsibility among the youth, leading to a healthier and more vibrant community. As the project unfolds, the people of Port Loko look forward to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
