On Friday, 18th July 2025, Councilor Elizabeth Miatta Sellu officially handed over an empowerment package to the women of Jahn Chiefdom in Gbeik, Kailahun District. The package, valued at 40,000 new leones, includes a shop building, a cooler, a freezer, and essential agricultural tools, all made possible through the support of SEND Sierra Leone. This initiative aims to promote women’s empowerment and enhance their independence within the district. Councillor Sellu expressed her commitment to fulfilling promises made during her election campaign, highlighting the importance of empowering women in her constituency.

During the ceremony, Councilor Sellu praised SEND Sierra Leone for their unwavering support in ensuring that the women of Kailahun District are equipped with the necessary tools to succeed. She emphasized that the shop would serve as a business hub for women interested in entrepreneurship, while experienced women will mentor those who are new to business practices.

The agricultural tools will be utilized by local farmers, enabling them to enhance their productivity. The proceeds from these ventures are designed to support women's savings schemes, allowing them to share profits and rotate the main capital annually. Councillor Sellu noted that this initiative aims to reduce the reliance on high-interest loans, which have historically led to the migration of women seeking to escape debt. Many have left their homes, leaving their children behind, due to the fear of repercussions from unpaid loans.

Beneficiary Nepo Tommy expressed her gratitude for the empowerment package, stating, "We will put the money and equipment to good use. We have longed for such assistance, and we are thankful it has come at a time we need it most, especially during this planting season." This empowerment package marks a significant step towards enhancing the livelihoods of women in Kailahun District, fostering a sense of community, and promoting sustainable development in the region.
