Port Loko, Sierra Leone – June 1, 2026, Sierra Leone Media Educators (SLeME) has launched its Women's Adult Literacy Empowerment Program in Port Loko under the theme "Empowering Women Through Literacy." SLeME is a non-profit organisation based in Port Loko District, established in 2015. Over the years, the organisation has supported community development through various service delivery initiatives. Currently, SLeME provides educational support to approximately ten orphaned students. The literacy program is targeting 100 adult women in Port Loko. Phase One will benefit 60 women, while Phase Two will support an additional 40 participants.
Speaking during the opening session, the Program Coordinator, Madam Aisha Amara, thanked the beneficiaries for their participation and emphasised the importance of women's empowerment. "Women's empowerment remains a key agenda of SLeME," she said, encouraging participants to remain focused and committed throughout the training.
Through this initiative, participants will learn to read and write with confidence and improve their basic numeracy and financial literacy skills, enhance their ability to access information and opportunities, strengthen their participation in family, community, and national development, and build self-confidence and lifelong learning skills.
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SLeME, Alusine Babah Kamara, who is solely sponsoring the initiative, called on community leaders, parents, and well-wishers to support the program by encouraging beneficiaries to remain committed to attending classes and completing the training. Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the Founder and staff of Sierra Leone Media Educators for implementing what they described as a transformative and impactful initiative.
