The Pujehun Correctional Center, established in 1914 to accommodate 75 inmates, is now grappling with a significant overcrowding crisis, housing over 130 inmates. This alarming situation raises concerns about the living conditions and overall management of the facility. In a recent interview, Augustine Songu, the head of the correctional center, acknowledged the challenges posed by the increasing inmate population. He praised the efforts of the Director General of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service for striving to improve the center's facilities and services. Despite the overcrowding, Songu highlighted that the center is equipped with essential amenities, including access to clean water and medical care for all inmates. Additionally, the training facilities have been upgraded, allowing inmates to participate in skill development programs.

Songu reported that the behavior of the inmates has been commendable, with many cooperating positively with the staff. He emphasized the collaborative relationship between the correctional officers and inmates, which fosters a more conducive environment for rehabilitation. However, Songu called on stakeholders and the community for support in constructing a perimeter fence to enhance security around the facility. He stressed the importance of viewing correctional centers as places for rehabilitation rather than punishment. "The Pujehun Correctional Center is not a place to treat people negatively, but a venue for restructuring inmates to adopt more positive attitudes," he said, reiterating that the focus should be on rehabilitation rather than retribution. As overcrowding continues to be a pressing issue, the Pujehun Correctional Center remains committed to improving the quality of life for its inmates while appealing for community support to enhance security and rehabilitation efforts.
