CHIEF MINISTER UNDERTAKES PODA-PODA RIDE TO ENGAGE CITIZENS

Regent Road–Lumley, Freetown, Tuesday 26 May 2026 – In a demonstration of people-centered leadership and responsive governance, David Moinina Sengeh joined commuters on a poda-poda public transportation ride from Circular Road to Lumley to directly engage citizens and gain first-hand insight into the daily realities faced by ordinary Sierra Leoneans during peak-hour movement across the city.

The engagement, which took place at the close of a busy day of official duties, formed part of the Chief Minister’s continued efforts to stay connected with citizens, understand their concerns, and ensure that government policies and interventions remain aligned with the lived experiences of the people. During the ride and interactions at various public transport junctions, the Chief Minister engaged commuters, drivers, and workers in open conversations centred on two key questions: what the government is currently doing well and should continue to strengthen, and which areas require urgent improvement. The responses from citizens highlighted public transportation and energy supply as major areas that require attention, while also recognising the positive impact of flagship government initiatives such as the Free Quality School Education Programme.

One commuter who benefited from the Free Quality School Education initiative explained how the programme enabled him to acquire skills that are now helping him contribute meaningfully to society. Another citizen referenced the Nant Energy Project, expressing optimism that once fully implemented, it would significantly help address the country’s energy challenges. These interactions reflected growing public awareness of ongoing government interventions and reinforced the importance of sustained citizen engagement in governance and development processes.

As part of the experience, Chief Minister also observed several safety and operational concerns within the public transportation system, including unsafe passenger boarding practices, vehicles failing to stop properly for commuters, and drivers not reaching their designated final destinations resulting in inconvenience and additional financial burden on citizens. He noted that these issues require urgent attention and pledged to engage relevant stakeholders, including the Motor Drivers Union, to explore practical solutions that will improve safety, efficiency, and accountability within the transport sector.

Passing through Murray Town, the Chief Minister also observed the near completion of the ongoing road reconstruction works, highlighting the government’s continued investments in infrastructure development aimed at improving mobility, connectivity, and economic productivity across the country. The engagement underscores the government’s commitment to participatory governance and responsive leadership, where citizens’ voices remain central to decision-making and national development. It also aligns with the vision of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio under the Big Five Game Changers agenda, particularly the pillars focused on Technology and Infrastructure, Human Capital Development.

By directly engaging citizens in their everyday environments, the government continues to strengthen trust, improve policy responsiveness, and identify practical interventions that address the real needs of the population. The initiative further demonstrates the importance of inclusive leadership and shared national responsibility in advancing sustainable development and building a more efficient, safe, and prosperous Sierra Leone. Chief Minister reaffirmed that effective leadership must remain grounded in the experiences of the people, emphasising that citizens' voices will continue to shape government priorities and national transformation efforts.
