SPEAKER THOMAS AND GHANAIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER PLAN TO ESTABLISH SIERRA LEONE–GHANA PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDSHIP GROUP

The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Dr. Senalor K. Yawlui, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas on Monday, 1st June 2026. The visit was aimed at fostering stronger parliamentary cooperation between the two sister countries.

In his remarks, Dr. Yawlui noted that the President of Ghana enjoys a cordial working relationship with H.E. President Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone. He stated that Sierra Leone and Ghana have signed several cooperation agreements, particularly in the cocoa sector, and have also collaborated in areas such as political consultation, tourism, health, and other aspects of governance. The High Commissioner, however, observed that parliamentary cooperation remains one area that has not yet been fully explored. He emphasized that parliamentary collaboration is vital to advancing bilateral relations. He informed the Speaker that the courtesy visit was specifically intended to devise plans to strengthen parliamentary ties between Sierra Leone and Ghana, envisioning the proposed cooperation as a platform for both countries to share best practices.

In his response, Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas expressed delight at the visit. He assured the Ghanaian High Commissioner of his full commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two nations. The Speaker noted that Sierra Leone and Ghana have long enjoyed sisterly relations with enduring diplomatic ties. He recalled that during the struggle for independence, leaders of both countries worked closely together through extensive consultation. He affirmed that Ghana and Sierra Leone share similar geopolitical histories, adding that “when I am in Ghana, I do not miss home.”

The Speaker endorsed the proposal to establish a Sierra Leone–Ghana Parliamentary Friendship Group and assured the High Commissioner of his eagerness to see the initiative realized.
